I'm aliiiiiive! Haha, sorry friend, Spanish summer apparently nearly killed all my brain cells and made me a puddle of sweat. But I'm coming back, slowly out of it!
I missed reading these posts! Also, totally get your feeling about summer being the time when everyone expects you to do things, etc. I felt the same, and I honestly ditched many of the plans I had because, well, I couldn't cope with being 30ºC at 9pm. Still can't!
I read some of the Substack posts you recommend, the one about "I got rid of my phone..." was very memorable for me. I deleted some of my social media during this summer and the same for chatting apps, and it has given me back the brain space that I needed. I didn't realise how much noise there was until that moment.
The books you read are impressive! Will catch up with your July bookmarks asap :)
It’s so good to hear from you! Although I’ve been following your little adventures on social :) I hope the weather settles a bit though, because when it’s 30°C at 9pm, you can’t even properly enjoy summer. Expectations or not, nothing is happening! I’m sending you a cool breeze from Edinburgh and hoping it gets a little better down there.
I completely agree about the little changes with your social media consumption. You don’t need to do a full 360 to make a huge difference, and I think your approach was probably much kinder to yourself too :)
lovely read as always, Amandine 💗 reading your essays is always a highlight in my month!
I agree so much with the pressure of having the best summer of your life. I tried not to be too much on Instagram this summer in order to prevent that. but sometimes I caught myself scrolling again and comparing. I saw this post of my friend with the caption "summer maxxing with habibi". so funny, and it seems like we even have a word for it now.
I took so many pictures these last weeks, which I also haven't posted yet. I prefer to post them after the trip too, and not in the middle of it, as it kind of takes me out of the experience. but now I also feel the pressure to post them asap. I don't know yet how I will handle this feeling.
It’s funny how we’ve internalised this pressure so much, and social media just adds another layer to it. I hate the whole “maxxing” thing. Can’t we just live life? Why do we have to max out on everything?
I completely get what you mean about feeling pressure to post your photos too. I have pictures from June that I still haven’t posted, and I keep reminding myself that nobody cares if they appear in August or September. It’s such an odd one though!
thank you so much! i’m so glad you enjoy my reading recommendations. is there a book you’ve loved recently? i’m always looking for new recommendations!
